BRUGES, BELGIUM In the 16th century, before the use of house numbers and also taking the place of hanging signs to identify the owner, gable stones were set into house fronts. These stones may have had a colorful image of a notable person or quote were quite commonly used. These quotes were usually biblical because people thought it would act as a talisman to protect them. As these two lovely ladies have above their door in Latin, “If God Be For Us Who Can Be Against Us?” |
