GOLDEN GATE BRIDGE The Golden Gate Bridge is an engineering marvel of the 20th century. Who was the first to publicly conceive of the preposterous idea of a suspension bridge over the San Francisco bay in the year of 1869? Who else, but a San Francisco madman, or as others preferred, a reverend eccentric called Emperor I of the United States, Joshua Norton. When the misty clouds arrive, the bridge and its partner, the fog, seem to dance as they appear and disappear on the horizon. |
