TAKING A WALK ON THE WILD SIDE
"Walk on the Wide Side" is a Lou Reed song. It is quite debatable if Andy Warhol and his infamous "factory" friends, who are lyrically described in the song, would consider this trek in Chamonix by young fashionable women a "Walk On The Wild Side". Nevertheless, it was a daring venture for them to do. Long-skirted ladies would take a tall walking cane, an umbrella, and a guide for support. This all made for exhilarating conversation later in the day.
Remember, this is the Victorian era and Lou Reed's words would have had a different connotation when he sang:
"Hey babe, take a walk on the wild side."
